The cover letter that accompanies your resume on your job search is the first thing that your prospective employer sees – your first advertisement. Naturally you must embellish your cover letter with certain qualities so that it leaves a good impression on the employer about you.
Let your real personality come out in your cover letter and it will complement the skills and experiences you showcase in your resume. These are just some reasons why a cover letter should not be looked at as a less popular cousin to the resume, but rather an equal and complementary partner.
Your reasons for changing careers (if applicable). If you have spent 20 years in investment banking are now pursuing a career in teaching, the hiring manager’s first question will be, “Why the change?” Offering some insight will give them perspective about you and where you are career-wise.
Briefly mention the job you have applied for in the first paragraph and the source from where you have heard of the opening. In the second paragraph briefly highlight the qualities that make you the best candidate for the job. Think creatively and write persuasively and crisply.
