Starting off with ”My name is…” is pretty irrelevant when you think about it. Your name is already at the top of the page, or it’s listed as the return name in your email message; you don’t need to remind them a third time. Instead, you need to focus on why you are writing this letter, and stick to just that.
Though many people underestimate the importance of a cover letter, one reason is because many don’t really know what goes into it. It is actually a great place to catch a hiring manager’s attention and showcase things that just can’t be communicated as well in a resume.
Without including a CV letter with your correspondence, with or without a resume, you will be setting yourself up for instant failure! To most business executives, not including a CV letter in your business correspondence is considered lazy and unprofessional.
Having thus put the employer in a pleasant state of mind, your letter must now proceed to make a real impression. Form letters will make no impressions on anyone, so customize your cover letter for each job. Keep the content of the cover letter simple and professional in tone and about half a page in length (stretching to a maximum of one page).
